These eight stories deal with ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, war and its aftershocks prominent among them, where the reality is often much more surreal than fiction. A platoon defends a minefield which quickly becomes a garbage dump, where the weapons of choice are taunts and insults, with disastrous results. Two strangers adopt a war orphan and forge ahead with a plan to smuggle him out of the country in their luggage.

In this collection of short fiction by acclaimed poet Goran Simic, the reader is presented a world where little makes sense and life has exactly the value accorded it. Yet it is both a very human and humane world, where small gestures provide the bridges the allow for reconciliation, hope and love.
